You’ll probably have got wind of the Twin Peaks reboot by now (given that it was arguably the television event of 2017 it would have been hard not to). A new season of David Lynch’s iconic show didn’t just guarantee more on-screen goodness - it also sent musos wild with anticipation of another score from Angelo Badalamenti, Lynch and the gang.

As he was for the first two series, Badalamenti is the lynchpin here (pun very much intended). The composer delivers another set of eerie reveries that plunge listeners into the uncanny valley. Though plenty of time has passed since the first two seasons of Twin Peaks, Badalamenti certainly hasn’t lost the knack - his droning keyboards, chorus-drenched guitars and woozy synth melodies remain as potent as they were back in the early 90’s.

Lynch involves himself in the music-making once again. The second entry of Limited Event Series is his monolithic re-rendering of Muddy Magnolias’ ‘American Woman’. Where the original was a sparky blues-rock number, Lynch chops and screws the track until it turns into a heavy piece that borders on witch-house. A similar effect is achieved when Lynch links up with Dean Hurley for ‘Slow 30’s Room’, and Badalamenti & Lynch go toe-to-toe as Thought Gang on the weird free-jazz number ‘Headless Chicken’.

Possibly the most intriguing moments of Limited Event Series are its outliers. Johnny Jewel crops up twice - once solo, once as part of Chromatics - and it’s fascinating to see how a musician so heavily influenced by Lynch’s aesthetic fits into an actual Lynchian work. At the heart of the LP sits Krzysztof Penderecki's terrifying classical composition Threnody For The Victims Of Hiroshima, a screeching wall of strings that only adds to the off-kilter hysteria of Lynch’s oeuvre.

Death Waltz’s lovingly-rendered edition of the soundtrack from the third season of Twin Peaks does justice to another groundbreaking work by David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti.
