Borne out of a series of austere loops played on a viola da gamba — a cello-like stringed instrument popularised in the Renaissance and Baroque periods — composer-producer Thomas William Hill gradually transformed his skeletal compositions into great forces of nature with Grains of Space. Hill’s minimal phrases evolve into washes of impressionistic marvels, accentuated by a host of percussive textures derived from gongs, singing bowls, bowed metallophones, and drum machines.
