A truly earthbound global experience — and yet conversely of other worlds yet unknown — Cuban/Iranian troupe Ariwo inject London’s teeming contemporary jazz scene with deep bass, afro-Cuban polyrhythms and driving electronics. When the sax first hits in ‘Ireme’, the sensation is palpably joyous, like sunlight cutting through dark clouds. Just as the group are able to cast a spell, they too are capable of breaking it, often within the same song. True to its title, Quasi is of no single genre; it’s a chimeric amalgam of multiple styles.
