Imagine yourself at twilight, in a dilapidated schoolhouse on the outskirts of town. The building’s walls are cracked, the windows are smashed, and an evergreen overgrowth has started reclaiming the land. You can hear the constant whisper of crickets; you can almost feel the overgrowth expand. This is a mental image of the uncanny electronics of Brick Reds, Black Mauves (Edinburgh musician Alex Ander, one half of Dalhous), making his solo EP debut on Lapsus. The Edinburgh musician best known for his work in Dalhous (Blackest Ever Black, Lapsus) eponymous debut release from Brick Reds, Black Mauves invites the listener into a world of distorted ambiences and post-rockish soundscaping. Bvdub’s overwhelmed drones are the most immediate touchstones for tracks like ‘Their Magic Play Of Flames’ and ‘Point To Point’. Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement’s arid vistas and Abul Mogard’s fragile synthscapes also spring to mind. Ander brings Dalhous partner Marc Dall to the party towards the end of Brick Reds, Black Mauves - the pair’s remix of ‘Cabochon’ is dreamlike and dark.
