Boots Riley’s 2018 hit Sorry To Bother You, starring Lakeith Standfield and Tessa Thompson, is a social satire of the highest order, set in a near future dystopia uncannily similar to our own. Described by the director as “the film’s musical voice”, the score was concocted by outlandish art pop outfit Tune-Yards, and it stands as a Tune-Yards album in its own right. The madcap world beat sensibilities of project leader Merrill Garbus is interspersed with the garbled dialogue of the film, demonstrating a level of originality seldom seen in score work.
