The 2000 Warp release Trainer collates some of Plaid’s earliest and most sought after material as well as inclusions from the duo’s solo aliases Atypic (Andrew Turner) and Balil (Ed Handley). The opening breaks of ‘Uneasy Listening’ take us right back to the 1989 second summer of love with its funky, chopped up arrangement and early rave stabs with the lucid groove of 1991 piece ‘Chirpy’ laying the foundations for what would later evolve into trip-hop. In addition to these genre defining cuts, Trainer also includes material from Plaid’s seminal debut LP Mbuki Mvuki, with the jazzy drum rolls of ‘Slice Of Cheese’ and the bitty, synth string mania of ‘Bouncing Cheeks’ an early blueprint for some of the duo’s later masterpieces.
