The WEWANTSOUNDS label are currently in the middle of a huge Akiko Yano reissues project, and the latest of Yano’s records to be given new life is her 1976 debut LP Japanese Girl. This album was recorded between Tokyo and Los Angeles - a band including Haruomi Hosono backs Yano on the Japanese side, while Lowell George’s Little Feat lend a hand on the flip. This is a highly unusual record that blends influences from orchestral pop, A.O.R., traditional Japanese song and an early version of City Pop into a quixotic and winning set of songs.
