The first LP from Islam Chipsy’s group EEK to drop in four years arrives courtesy of Cairo-based imprint 100Copies. Kahraman is another superb example of the group’s electrified take on shaabi, the Egyptian musical style that translates into English as ‘of the people’. While Chipsy wrings drones, melodies and all manner of synthesised sounds from his keyboards, the two drummers who flank him (Khaled Mando and Islam Ta’ta’) provide the rhythmic muscle which gives Kahraman such drive.
