Tim Doyle is one of the more unique figures currently moving among London’s resurgent jazz scene. As Chiminyo the Theon Cross/Maisha drummer uses some self-coded software to allow him to trigger and manipulate sounds while still banging away on the kit. It’s a novel approach to music-making, but as I Am Chiminyo demonstrates this impressive setup is more than just a gimmick. Doyle has crafted a lovely EP of leftfield beats here, one that draws influence from neo-soul and the electric post-jazz of artists like Slugabed.
