With interest in Carl Stone revived via two recent Unseen Worlds compilations, the incomparable post-minimalist composer now drops his first new LP in several years in the form of Baroo. Working as usual with manipulated and processed samples, Stone’s music here both harks back to his early days and displays a new-found focus. Where ‘Sun Dong Nan’ is choppy in a manner that brings to mind Steve Reich’s ‘It’s Gonna Rain’ in the fourth world, a cut like ‘Baroo’ is rhythmically-charged and ecstatic.
