Few vocalist can claim to have worked with the disparate likes of both Pharaoh Sanders and J Dilla, but Dwight Trible has done just that. A legend in his own right, the LA singer seems incapable of attracting anything less than the biggest players in jazz across his 40-year career. Fronting an all-star band, featuring guest spots from megastar saxophonist Kamasi Washington, Mothership is more cosmic than even its title suggests. Trible commands his vocal to bends and break as the situation demands it, dramatically crooning on ‘It’s All About Love’, and languidly sliding all over his dizzying, hazy arrangement of The Beatles’ ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’.
