Much like other countercultural composers before her — like Arthur Russell, Jim O’Rourke and Kevin Drumm — the world of contemporary classical music is much too stringent to house the freewheeling Sarah Hennies. Joyously eluding the institution for many years, Hennies’ wildly inventive compositions weave patchwork fables of controlled-chaos percussion and vocal prowess. Embedded Environments, pressed here by Blume alongside other avant-garde greats, is a stunning document of Hennies’ singular talent.
