After making a name for himself in recent years as the go-to tuba player for London’s hot nu-jazz scene, Theon Cross steps up to centre-stage with debut solo LP Fyah. The Sons Of Kemet/Moses Boyd Exodus man assembles an impressive cast here - Boyd, Nubya Garcia and Wayne Francis are but three of the artists among Fyah’s credits. It’s no surprise, then, that many of the tracks here are raucous explosions of groove and rhythm. The chicken-scratch funk track ‘Candace Of Meroe’ and slamming massed-brass opener ‘Activate’ are particular highlights.
