After dropping EPs on a range of labels that includes Blank Slate and Grow Vinyl, the Parisian artist Shcaa now lands on R&S for this new single. Both tracks on An Ungrateful Death are slow-burning numbers whose grooves hover in the space between deep house and minimal techno. On the 13-minute-long title cut Shcaa builds up a snappy, evasive rhythm that is not dissimilar to one of Nicolas Jaar’s early releases. Atop this Shcaa’s broken and unusual blues guitar playing proves to be an oddly arresting substitute for a vocal. Around two-thirds of the way through ‘An Ungrateful Death’ turns itself inside-out and becomes a meditative downtempo number. On the flip ‘Pacific Gold’ comes across as a hybrid of Metrist’s wacky minimal sound and the airless production style of early James Blake.
