The story of Super Wings’ second LP My Love is For You is like a micro rock documentary; dogged by loss, hubris and intergroup rivalries. Beginning life in South East Nigeria in the early 70s, a group known as The Wings emerged among many others conceived solely to entertain federal troops. The Wings enjoyed relative success until the tragic death of lead singer Spud Nathan, killed in a car accident whilst being driven by guitarist Manford Best. Rather than respecting pleas for a musical hiatus, Best instead formed the break-away group Super Wings. 1977’s My Love is For You marks this odd legacy’s musical peak — a groovy slice of introspective funk.
