The latest drop on Ghostly International-offshoot Spectral Sound (Fort Romeau, Matrixxman) comes from Bermuda-born, Oakland-based artist Russell E. L. Butler. Their Petty EP is a collection of weighty, agitating and high-energy techno cuts that are designed to, in Butler’s own words, ‘reject the performance of respectability’ that they feel expected to act out as a financially-privileged, able-bodied and educationally-privileged black person. This boldness and energy is channelled into the booming, bass-led numbers on Petty - cuts like ‘Tree Frog Whistle’ and ‘Offset In The Shadow’ sound like darkside mutations of early Jeff Mills.
