Finnish-born, Glasgow-based artist Maria Rossi — AKA Cucina Povera — follows up the runaway success of her Night School debut Hilja with a work which is decidedly more searching. More an auditory notebook of stream-of-consciousness sounds in fascinating spaces, Zoom is both elemental force and quiet intimacy, largely improvised and recorded with a Tascam Zoom recorder and a loop pedal. Here we are permitted to hear an empty space, as Rossi fills the void with little more than her own voice, resembling the starkness of early choral music. Taking cues from mid-century avant-garde musicians like Steve Reich and Meredith Monk, Zoom denotes an artist making remarkable strides so early in her career.
