XL go back to basics with this new 12" from The Higher. The Core combines the rave and hardcore sounds of the label’s formative years with the rose-tinted throwback aesthetic of more recent XL signees like Overmono. Indeed, sometimes The Higher goes so far as to time-stamp their tracks in club aesthetics of yore - both ‘Submarine ‘95’ and ‘Submarine ‘99’ would be able to slip into a DJ set from their respective years of reference with a minimum of fuss. Rewind to the first half of the EP and we get two junglist tunes in the form of ‘The Core’ and ‘Stick 3’. Special Request would be pleased with the roiling breakbeats of the latter.
