Despite having released over 50 albums during his 30-year career, Moulay Ahmed El Hassani is virtually unknown outside his home country of Morocco. His unique form of Moroccan folk, informed by traditional styles particular to the mid-Atlas region and electrified with drum machines and autotuned vocals, strikes a wondrous balance between the pre-modern and the hyper-futuristic. Regardless, El Hassani’s microtonal guitar compellingly ties these worlds together.
