Despite the death of key member Jean-Marie Mathoul in 2018, it’s difficult to imagine 48 Cameras ever truly closing up shop. Mathoul and 48C were always more anti-band and anti-bandleader. The long-running, long-distance project’s members rarely share the same room; many collaborators never even met at all. It’s doubtful that Chosen Songs will constitute 48C’s final release, but its chilling passages, sparsely signposted by multi-lingual poetry, can’t help but echo the loss of a major creative talent.
