Mark Stewart and The Maffia
Learning To Cope With Cowardice / The Lost Tapes (Definitive Edition)
Catalogue Number
Release Date
January 25, 2019

Mark Stewart + The Mafia's Learning To Cope With Cowardice freshly reissued b Mute and landing with an entire album of unheard recordings from the iconic albums original sessions. Recorded and produced by Mark Stewart and Adrian Sherwood and originally released via Sherwood's On-U Sound way back when, Mute have recharged the batteries on this much loved post-punk classic. Still clinging to the cold world claustrophobia that made it such an enticing listen back in 1983, the original album is nicely complemented by the extra disc/album 'The Lost Tapes'. As Mark Stewart says best... “It was a real adventure discovering this forbidden history, a twisted tale of Muswell hillbillies, French pirates and a Dutch schizophrenic doctor doing psychic archaeology.” Whilst Adrian Sherwood describes these works as characteristic of a distinct primitivism: “[The Lost Tapes represent] the early childhood of the songs before Mark and me conducted frenzied, scorched earth, slash-and-burn, twenty-hour mental, manic editing sessions at Crass’ studios that led to birthing the finished album.” Classic!
