The latest LP from Deru arrives on Friends Of Friends (Tomas Barfod, Sweatson Klank). Torn In Two is a challenging set of contemporary classical compositions that have a distinctly cinematic quality to them. Recordings of brass and woodwind instruments are processed and bent into foreboding new shapes, from unsettling microtonal drones to uncanny chamber soundscapes. Even when Deru stumbles onto sonic vistas of relative beauty - the cerebral ambiences of ‘The Overview Effect’, for example - there is always the sense that strife lurks just around the corner.
