In hindsight, post-punk and free-jazz became easy bedfellows; not so in 1979, when synth-punk outsiders Gerry and the Holograms formed and skronking saxophonist was busy making its name in the free-improvisation underground. 1981 saw the two forces collide as 48 Chairs, and their sole joint effort 70% Paranoid, energised by unstoppable drum machines and glossolalic vox/sax conversations, is today viewed as one of Manchester’s forgotten gems.
