Vril nails his usual balance of panoramic dub techno and glistening ambience here, but the textures and sounds drawn from his arsenal of synths and software display even more depth and subtle allure than ever before. The thudding, solitary kick drum on the title track could fill a whole room, but it’s the faint hi-hat at the top of each phase that draws you in. A similar trick occurs on more propulsive tracks like ‘Sine Fine’ where a bashed out chord slips just behind the kick to create tension. Anima Mundi is full of these sorts of simple, but highly effective modulations.
