Herbert Groenemeyer’s Groenland Records have done a great job of paying tribute to Holger Czukay, the former Can bassist and all-round Krautrock visionary who passed away in 2017 at the age of 79. Following on from Cinema, the retrospective boxset that Groenland released to celebrate what would have been Czukay’s 80th birthday, the label are now giving new life to some of Czukay’s out-out-print masterworks. One of these is 1987’s Rome Remains Rome. Czukay’s fifth solo LP stirred up some controversy at the time of release for sampling the Pope (‘Blessed Easter’), but to modern ears the record proves more interesting for its singular fusion of Krautrock, techno, Latin jazz and lounge music.
