First put out by Japanese label VAP back in 1983 and long sought after by collectors, ‘East Plants’ gets a reissue now by BBE with original artwork, insert and translated notes. A post-bop album that features dazzling reed sections from Shuichi Enomoto and Toshiko Inoue, Moriyama’s work peels back the curtain to give listeners a spectacular insight into the world of underground Japanese jazz during the twentieth century. For connoisseurs and regular fans of Steve Reid alike, Moriyama’s drum solo on ‘Fields’ is a remarkable credit to a highly unique genre.
