The latest album from Stine Janvin Mortland drops via PAN (Amnesia Scanner, Puce Mary). Fake Synthetic Music is an apt title for the Berlin-based artist’s latest record. Many of the textures here appear, on first listen at least, as if they were created by machines. This is an LP full of the kind of glitches, gurgles, groans and gasps that one could easily mistake for the sounds of a synthesiser. However, the trick is that all of the tones on the album have been created by Janvin’s voice. Sometimes they are left untouched - the piercing pipe-organ high notes that crop up all over Fake Synthetic Music are a good example of this - and sometimes they are bent into strange new forms, but all of them originated from Janvin herself. It makes for a strangely captivating listen that will appeal to fans of Laurie Tompkins and the rest of the Sacred Tapes crew.
