Tricky’s Maxinquaye is one of those albums you revisit for the rest of your life. Forged from Tricky’s dissatisfaction with his role in Massive Attack, he enlisted the vocal talents of Martina Topley-Bird to create something simultaneously disturbing and seductive, soaked in dub echo and marked by a demented mind. Never mind being the defining statement of trip hop; despite its 1995 release, conceived from Bristolian urban decay, Maxinquaye still sounds like the future.
