Bleep

Another week, another great CPU release. The prolific Sheffield label have hit another homerun with this new Maelstrom EP. Fragment is classic CPU fare. This quartet of tracks uses a retro-tastic electro/acid sound as a base from which other styles can be brought into play. The opening title track verges on Ostgut techno with its austere groove and cavernous drums, while ‘The Scope’ combines a quick two-step with squelchy electro-funk synths to great effect. Flip the record over and ‘USSIDD’ sticks with the funk flex while also leaning heavily on the 303s. Proceedings round out with the nimble Detroitism of ‘Utility Shift’.
