As part of 4AD’s essential reissue series, the London label releases Dead Can Dance’s second album on vinyl. Originally released in 1985, Spleen and Ideal sees the Australian duo incorporate more instrumentation than before. With the maudlin trombone melody of the dramatic instrumental ’Ascension’ and vividly played cellos adding texture on ‘Mesmerism’, the result is a richer sound. The haunting atmosphere created by Lisa Gerrard’s reverberant vocals on ‘Circumradiant Dawn’ and ‘De Profundis’ is contrasted with Brendan Perry’s lyrics on ‘Advent’, which documents their shift towards dark wave.
