After 12” drops from the likes of Lanark Artefax and Renick Bell, Lee Gamble’s UIQ imprint offers up their first full-length record. It’s an intriguing one, too. rkss may have entitled this album DJ Tools, but when you consider that previous rkss drops have been called things like Brostep In The Style Of Florian Hecker then you begin to wonder if all will be as it seems. Sure enough, what we have here is far more than a set of locked grooves and 16-bar drum loops. Manipulating the sounds of an ‘EDM Kicks’ sample pack, rkss creates a record of noisy electroacoustic music and concrete that sometimes touches on club deconstructionism. Think EVOL, Lorenzo Senni and Mica Levi getting together and having a lovely old time.
