Six years on from the last Spiritualized LP and J. Spaceman/Jason Pierce comes through with the project’s eighth full-length. The recording process for And Nothing Hurt was a neat encapsulation of the frustrations of being a music-maker in the age of uncertain revenue streams. Having gigged huge venues off the back of 2012’s Sweet Heart, Sweet Light, Pierce found himself writing some of the grandest and most widescreen music of his career. However, he also found himself unable to afford the requisite studio time to realise his ambitions. Through sheer force of will he managed to get this record sounding right despite recording it straight into a laptop at his home in London. The nine tracks of And Nothing Hurt are bombastic and brilliant, lush and full of melody in a manner reminiscent of The Flaming Lips’ The Soft Bulletin or mid-period Eels.
