Completed at the artist’s home studio in L.A., Astronautica’s ‘Death Valley’ is a heat inducing ode to an otherworldly landscape; what at first appears arid and uninhabitable later reveals a network of vibrant and hectic activity, offering unique sights of the night sky and formations of colour and sound totally specific to the location. Astronautica aims to imbue her tracks with a similar sense of mystery and awe, her glitchy beats and soft lyrics drifting between R&B and electronica for the most part. ‘Can’t Remember’, the first single from the album, flutters forward, the beat at the center rhythmically correcting itself like a heart battling to find the right pace, and the male R&B vocal hums carefully over the track, its presence backing in and out of focus. An exciting offering from a pioneering producer operating at the center of America’s west coast experimental beat scene.
