Matthew Herbert owns Accidental Records, so it makes sense that the imprint’s offshoot label Accidental Jnr. should provide a home for some new editions of Herbert’s older work. Accidental Jnr. are currently reissuing a series of EPs Herbert cut back in the 1990s. Back when Herbert was known only by his surname he was making deep house records that married the classy feel of producers like Moodymann with his own penchant for experimental sounds. He perhaps never struck a better balance between the two than on the fourth EP in the series. While modern ears will detect a distinct Mahogani/Rhythm Section International vibe to the likes of ‘Pen’ and ‘Resident’, ‘Take Me Back’ is a jacked techno jam made of sterner stuff than the rest.
