B12 co-founder Steven Rutter teams up with Sheffield’s John Shima to release ‘Step Into the Light’ on B12 sub-label FireScope Records. For Rutter, who has been producing music since the early nineties for the likes of Warp and later his own imprints, this atmospheric EP arrives following ‘BrainFog’, a sonic discussion on the producer’s experiences of depression following an almost fatal bike incident in 2010. Since the accident, the producer espouses, he has taken his music in a new direction, massively free of the pressures he used to diligently apply on himself. ‘Step Into the Light’ is a bright package of broken beats, exalting strings and pads of strange sampled noise. While ‘Skywards’ possesses moodier and more introspective soundscapes, an industrial style sample situated low in the mix evoking a sense of darkness, the synth parts elevate a good section of the track. This buoyancy of mood continues on ‘Broken Spell’ and ‘A New Day’, two stunning works of light, crystalline vision and ambient techno.
