You’ll not hear a more luxurious album opening in 2018 than that of Brandon Coleman’s Resistance. The first few seconds of ‘Live For Today’ are a woozy, dreamy delight, all twinkling keys and lush strings. Then the beat kicks in and you realise that what you’ve got in the headphones isn’t big-band jazz but a fine slab of boogie. The following tracks all ooze groove, sex and funk. Coleman’s a dab hand on the keys - you’d have to be to play in Kamasi Washington’s band - and he applies his craft to a set of squelchy synth tones reminiscent of Rockin’-era Herbie Hancock.
