In the Autumn of 2017 a pool of the best young jazz talent from London and Chicago descended on Dalston’s Total Refreshment Centre for a pair of sessions. The group was led by Makaya McCraven and included Soweto Kinch, Joe Armon-Jones and Nubya Garcia among its number. A couple of days later their recordings were taken to a live remix session at the same space, and then McCraven took all the material home and fashioned it into the new tape Where We Come From (Chicago X London). The rawness of the original recordings is what gives these tracks their edge - the peaking microphones, fuzzy low ends and rattling snares add an addictive grit to these dense hip-hop/jazz hybrids. Imagine a more scuffed-up, wild-eyed version of The Roots.
