Sometimes Matthew Herbert likes to go by just Herbert. He certainly did in the mid-1990s. Between 1995 and 1996 he released a five-part EP series of deep house goodness under his family name. Fast-forward to the present day and Accidental Jnr (Bambooman, Jamie Lidell) are reissuing some of the entries from that run. Part One is a confident affair of stepping club music of the like that is being reproduced now by MCDE and Rhythm Section International. ‘Oo Licky’ and ‘See You On Monday’ are particularly pleasing shufflers. The outlier is ‘Rude’ - while still incorporating some Stevie Wonder-inspired keys, the warped groove is closer to the IDM sound that was popular at the time.
