There’s a lot to celebrate on ‘Under Your Spell’, which drops on Desire band member and producer Johnny Jewel’s Italians Do It Better label. Featured on the acclaimed soundtrack of 2011’s Drive, Desire meld synth-pop credentials with coldwave and Italo disco influences, conspiring to rank the Canadian trio among a coterie of musicians defining an era of alternative pop. The ethereal female vocals, sharp synth hooks and sleek, stylised rhythm sections of ‘Under Your Spell’ easily explain the popularity of Desire’s LP. ‘Don’t Call’ takes the trio in a more uptempo and sassier direction, while ‘I Can Dream About You’ on the B-side is a strutting construct of weirdo electro bleeps, strings and moody tones. Two vocal mixes of ‘Under Your Spell’ and ‘Don’t Call’ also make a contemplative appearance on the B-side.
