Rod Modell’s Deepchord project returns to Astral Industries (Wolfgang Voigt, The Chi Factory) with these two lengthy ‘Immersions’. Both of the tracks here clock in at well over fifteen minutes, and Modell makes the most of the long run-times to craft some cerebral dub-techno. Both ‘Immersion I’ and ‘Immersion II’ begin with twinkling synthscapes that bring to mind dawn rising over the sea, a couple of gulls wheeling in the air and waves gently lapping at the shore. The tracks slowly usher in propulsive 140-bpm techno grooves over the course of a few minutes, but Modell’s light touch means that they remain in the background rather than steer the pieces off on new courses. After a few minutes the grooves gently ebb away to leave us back where we started. Beguiling and beautiful stuff.
