Room40 (Chihei Hatakeyama, Pinkcourtesyphone) drop the latest record from Norman Westberg. After Vacation is something of a break from Westberg’s usual style. Previous releases have generally seen the Swans guitarist run with the first take of a recording. However, here Westberg has patiently chipped away at these six numbers. Assisted by Room40 head honcho Lawrence English, Westberg crafts murky and often beautiful drone pieces. The likes of ‘Norman Seen As An Infant’ and ‘Levitation’ snowball from quiet beginnings into cathedral-large sheets of sound that bring to mind a less torrid version of what Westberg gets up to in Swans. Explosions In The Sky and bvdub are other touchstones.
