Ras G’s 2017 Cassette Store Day tape gets a vinyl release on the new Ghetto Sci-Fi Music imprint. My Kinda Blues is the follow-up to Ras G’s Baker’s Dozen series, and the tracks here catch the same kush-haze vibe of the beats on those albums. He dials back the astral Sun Ra-isms a few notches here, focussing instead on an earlier jazz epoch of Blue Note and post-bop. Comparisons to Madlib’s Shades Of Blue spring to mind, though My Kinda Blues is a more lackadaisical LP than Madlib’s seminal plunderphonics epic. Simply put, this is an elegant and cool beat tape.
