Sam Evian seems like a lovely young man, the sort who you could quite easily take home and introduce to the parents. These qualities carry over into a musical style where his breezy croon is backed by instrumentals that are a milieu of various retro-rock styles. On You, Forever, his second LP for Saddle Creek (Two Gallants, Bright Eyes), Rhodes gently tests the boundaries of his sound while also tightening up the screws of his songwriting. Tunes like ‘IDGAF’, ‘Summer Day’ and ‘Now I Feel It’ are sunny-day indie par excellence. Elsewhere Evian lightly peppers the record with influences of country (on … ‘Country’), Serge Gainsbourg-esque chansons (‘Next To You’) and lounge jazz (‘Katie’s Rhodes’). Think Whitney or maybe The Lemon Twigs.
