The third in a series by London-based and Mallorca-born Rupert Clervaux, Zibaldone III Of CVX references the Italian ‘zibaldone’, a commonplace book popularised by Giacomo Leopardi and literally translating as “a heap of things”. Clervaux’s work is an engaging sound tapestry constructed using extracts from the work of figures like Simone Weil and David Graeber, looped and manipulated to form rhythms that draw you in such a way that they almost distract from the political content of the sampled prose. At times layered over high octane techno ‘fits like Joey Beltram’s Orbital sampling ‘Energy Flash’ and at others spread across improvised piano or double bass compositions, ZIBALDONE III is a profoundly original work and a triumphant eulogy to the genius of Simone Weil.
