Happy Skull (Throwing Shade, D’Arcangelo) present a new two-track from dancefloor oddball Bass Clef. For more than a decade the one born Ralph Cumbers has been confounding clubbers with his shapeshifting, zany brand of electronica. This continues with Charnel House, a two-track that seems to take great delight in playing around with genres and sounds. A-side ‘Charnel House’, little more than a tinny kick drum and zippy bass line, could be classified as anything from UK funky to acid house. However, something about the way Cumbers pushes and prods the melody keeps the tune a consistently interesting - not to mention danceable - listen. On the flip, ‘Acid Hearse’ again flies in the face of convention, taking an electro-acid groove and staggering the drums to a point where they seem to be falling out of sync while still somehow retaining forward motion.
