Data Discs continue their modus operandi of issuing unsung masterpieces in the video game soundtrack field with this LP issue of Space Harrier. Composed by in-house musician Hiroshi ‘Hiro’ Kawaguchi, this 1985 arcade smasher features prominent use of the Yamaha DX-7. Once lauded as one of the most annoying clichés of 80s electronic music, this synthesiser has now become all the rage thanks to increased interest in the ambient and meditative minimalism of the decade. Sadly it’s in full swing here but don’t let that put you off! Hyperactive, genre spanning inventiveness from SEGA’s renowned composer.
