Bristolian imprint No Corner (Ossia, Asda) offer up a bold and challenging EP from Spiritflesh. The four cuts on Menace make good on the record’s title - this is eerie techno that often isn’t really techno at all. Opener ‘Mortuary’ weds a 6/4 groove to the sort of grainy soundscape usually dealt in by artists like Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement. ‘Pimp Femme’ is a nightmarish mutation of Balearic house - while the 100-bpm groove and synth bassline suggest an Ibiza dusk, the distorted voices and droning synths bring a freaky darkness to the proceedings. The final two tracks largely eschew drums to summon Coil, The Caretaker and Shackleton. Great stuff.
