The extremely good Anna Meredith comes through with another masterpiece for Moshi Moshi. After her 2016 LP Varmints scooped the Scottish Album Of The Year award, Meredith’s latest synthesis of the classical and the contemporary is Anno. Recorded alongside the Scottish Ensemble, Anno sees Meredith engage in a compositional back-and-forth with Antonio Vivaldi’s famous Four Seasons concerti. At times Vivaldi’s work is allowed to sing untethered; at others - ‘Birds (Spring)’ for instance - Meredith drowns the Baroque strings in a cacophony of electronically-processed sound. Often a balance is struck between the two. As ever with Meredith, Anno is a fun and fresh take.
