The latest release in the Selva Discos series - a team-up between Brazilian duo Selvagem and the always-on-the-money Glasgow label Optimo - is an interesting one. ‘Baiana’ is a modern Bahian folk song composed by Maria do Carmo Barbosa which, in the mid-2000s, was adapted by the body-percussionist ensemble Barbatuques for use in their live sets. The subsequent version, a barn-storming mix of polyrhythms, playground sing-song, mouth harp and rap, is unusual and utterly addictive. Having taken on a life of its own in Brazil and beyond, Brasingles Volume 2 marks the first time the tune has been released on vinyl. It comes backed with a more conventionally dancefloor-friendly re-rub from Jan Schulte in his Wolf Mueller guise.
