Aleksi Perala’s umpteenth piece of electronic wizardry sees the Rephlex graduate playing with the sonics of jungle, braindance and bleep ‘n’ bass. Both recognisably situating himself within the sound worlds of those listed genres yet also keeping a distinct distance from them, the Finnish veteran stumbles onto some beautiful stuff on Sunshine 2. The tempos are often high and the tracks generally run fast, but there’s a wonderful lightness of touch that keeps them from becoming overbearing. Even when he’s playing hard and loose, Perala’s twinkling synths and rich keyboards ensure we can see the sunshine of the LP’s title.
